FENCE DEMOLITION & REMOVAL EDMONTON

Fence Demolition & Removal Edmonton - Fast Teardown Service

Your old fence in Summerside has been falling apart for three years. Posts are leaning, boards are rotting, whole sections blew down last winter and you just propped them back up. You’re ready to replace it but first someone’s gotta tear down the old one and haul away all that wood. That’s way more work than you thought when you got quotes for the new fence. This is where fence removal Edmonton services save you days of brutal manual labor.

Last month we demolished and removed 180 feet of old wooden fence in Terwillegar. Thing was 25 years old, posts were rotted at ground level, boards were grey and splitting. Homeowner got quotes for new fence installation but every contractor wanted extra money to demo the old one first. We came in with a four-person crew, tore it all down in one day, pulled every post and concrete footing, hauled away three truckloads of wood. Saved them probably $1500 compared to what the fence companies quoted for demo.

Fence removal isn’t just unscrewing some boards. There’s posts buried in concrete, rails that are nailed or screwed together, years of weathering that makes everything harder to take apart. And then you got piles of wood to dispose of properly.

Why Fence Demolition Is Harder Than Expected

Old fences don’t come apart easy. Wood warps and twists over years of Edmonton weather. Nails rust and break off instead of pulling out. Screws strip when you try removing them. Boards crack and splinter when you pry them. What you think will take a few hours ends up taking days.

Posts are the worst part. Buried 2-3 feet deep in concrete footings. Can’t just pull them out – you gotta dig around the concrete, break it up, wrestle the whole thing out of the ground. Or cut the post at grade and leave the concrete buried, but then you got stumps everywhere.

Volume of waste surprises people. A typical residential fence generates way more debris than you’d think. 100 feet of 6-foot fence is like 600 square feet of boards plus all the posts and rails. That’s multiple truck loads of wood to haul away.

Edmonton weather makes old fences brittle. Freeze-thaw cycles, summer sun, years of moisture – the wood becomes fragile and hard to work with. Pressure-treated lumber that’s 20+ years old is heavy and full of splinters.

One customer in Riverbend started DIYing his fence removal. Got ten feet torn down over a weekend, realized he had 140 feet left to go, and his back was already killing him. Called us Monday morning. We finished the rest in six hours.

What's Involved in Fence Demolition

Fence demolition Edmonton starts with the boards or pickets. These are nailed or screwed to horizontal rails. We use pry bars, reciprocating saws, and impact drivers to remove boards fast. On really old fences we just tear boards off because they’re too damaged to remove carefully anyway.

Rails come off next. Usually 2x4s running horizontally between posts. These are attached to posts with brackets, nails, or screws. Taking rails down gives us access to the posts.

Posts are the main structural components. Typically 4x4s buried in concrete. We dig around the concrete footing, use pry bars and post pullers to yank the whole thing out. Sometimes we cut posts at ground level if that’s what makes sense for the property.

Concrete footings can be removed or left buried depending on what you want. Removing them means digging them out and hauling away chunks of concrete. Leaving them buried is faster and cheaper if you’re building a new fence in a different location or not replacing it at all.

Gates get demolished separately. Gate frames, hinges, latches – all comes apart and gets hauled away with the rest of the fence materials.

Chain link fences are different. Cutting the fabric, pulling posts, removing the metal framework. We do chain link removal too, though wooden fences are more common in Edmonton residential areas.

Types of Fences We Demolish

Wooden privacy fences are our most common jobs. Standard 6-foot board-on-board or solid panel fences. Every Edmonton backyard has one. These generate the most volume because of all the boards.

Cedar fences are popular in newer neighborhoods like Windermere and Ellerslie. Cedar lasts longer than regular treated lumber but still fails eventually. We’ve demolished plenty of 15-20 year old cedar fences that were falling apart.

Picket fences are less common but we remove them. Usually front yard decorative fences. Less material volume than privacy fences but still plenty of posts and pickets to dispose of.

Chain link fences are mostly commercial or older residential properties. Metal fabric and posts. We cut the fabric into manageable sections, pull posts, haul away the metal for recycling.

Vinyl or composite fences need removal too. These don’t rot like wood but they get damaged, fade, or people just want them gone. We’ve removed vinyl fences from properties all over Edmonton.

Wrought iron or ornamental metal fencing is less common but we handle it. Usually decorative fences in front yards. Heavier than wood, but recyclable as scrap metal.

Split rail fences around rural properties or acreages near Edmonton. These are simpler – just horizontal rails and vertical posts. Less material than privacy fences but can cover long distances.

Fence Posts and Concrete Footings

Every fence post sits in a concrete footing in Edmonton. Frost line is 4 feet deep, so proper footings prevent frost heave. Most residential fence posts are buried 2-3 feet in 10-12 inch diameter concrete.

Removing posts with concrete attached is hard work. Dig around the footing to expose it, use pry bars and leverage to break it free, lift out the whole chunk. A fence post with concrete can weigh 50-80 pounds.

We’ve got post pullers and proper equipment to make this faster. Still takes muscle and time, but we’re way more efficient than someone with just a shovel and crowbar.

Cutting posts at ground level is an option. Faster and easier, but you got concrete stumps buried in your yard. If you’re building a new fence in the exact same spot, sometimes installers work around the old footings. If you’re landscaping or using the space differently, buried concrete is a problem.

Full footing removal is what most people want. Clean slate, no obstacles buried in the yard. Takes longer and costs more but leaves your property properly cleared.

Property Line Fence Removal

Shared fences between properties are tricky. Technically both neighbors own it. You need agreement from your neighbor before tearing down a fence on the property line.

We’ve done property line fence removals where neighbors agreed to split the cost. Old fence was garbage, both sides wanted it gone, they coordinated on getting new fences installed separately. We demo the shared fence and each property handles their own new fence.

Sometimes one neighbor wants the fence gone and the other doesn’t care. We can remove your side’s fence posts and materials, but the situation depends on property line details and neighbor relationships. Not our call to make – that’s between neighbors.

Back lane fences in older Edmonton neighborhoods often need replacing. These face the alley and take a beating from wind and weather. Property owners are responsible for their own back fence even though it faces a shared lane.

Fence Removal for New Fence Installation

Most fence demolitions happen because people are installing new fences. Old fence is shot, time for replacement. We tear down the old one, haul everything away, fence installer comes in and builds new.

Fence companies often charge ridiculous prices for demo work. They’re fence builders, not demo guys. They’d rather quote you $2000 for demo so you look elsewhere for that part. We specialize in demo and removal, charge fair prices, and make the whole process smooth.

Timing coordination matters. New fence gets scheduled, we do demo a day or two before installation starts. Property is clean and ready when fence installer shows up. We’ve partnered with fence contractors all over Edmonton this way.

Sometimes people want demo done months before new fence goes up. Maybe they’re saving money, or planning and designing the new fence. We’re flexible on timing – demo whenever you need it done.

Fence Removal Without Replacement

Not everyone wants a new fence. Sometimes you’re opening up the yard, improving sight lines, reducing maintenance, or just don’t need a fence anymore. We’ve removed fences from properties where owners wanted open yards instead.

Corner lots often have fences that block visibility for drivers. Removing fences improves safety at intersections. We’ve done fence removals in older neighborhoods for exactly this reason.

Combining yards when families buy neighboring properties. Fence between the properties becomes unnecessary. We remove it and suddenly you got twice the yard space.

Properties being redeveloped or subdivided need fences removed as part of site prep. We’ve cleared fences from properties all over Edmonton that were being prepared for construction or major landscaping changes.

Wood Fence Disposal

Old fence wood goes to proper disposal facilities. Pressure-treated lumber has disposal restrictions because of the chemicals. We know which Edmonton facilities accept treated wood and handle disposal according to regulations.

Cedar and untreated wood sometimes gets recycled or chipped for mulch. Depends on condition. Really old weathered wood usually just goes to the dump.

We can’t legally burn fence wood and nobody should. Pressure-treated lumber releases toxic chemicals when burned. Proper disposal is the only safe option.

Some fence wood is full of nails and screws. Makes it harder to process for recycling. We pull out hardware when practical but alot of it stays embedded in the wood through disposal.

Chain Link and Metal Fence Recycling

Chain link and metal fencing gets recycled as scrap metal. The steel posts, fabric, and framework all have scrap value. We separate metal fencing and take it to scrap yards around Edmonton.

Recycling metal is better for the environment and offsets disposal costs slightly. Not enough scrap value to make fence removal free, but every bit helps.

Aluminum fencing is less common but worth more as scrap than steel. We’ve removed aluminum decorative fences from front yards in mature Edmonton neighborhoods.

Wrought iron and ornamental metal fencing is heavy but highly recyclable. All that metal gets processed and turned into new products instead of sitting in a landfill.

Fence Demolition Pricing

Fence removal Edmonton pricing depends on length, height, and type. Basic wood privacy fence might be $15-25 per linear foot for complete demo and removal including posts and footings.

A typical 100-foot privacy fence would run $1500-2500 for full removal. Shorter fences or simple picket fences cost less. Really tall fences or difficult access costs more.

Leaving concrete footings buried saves money. Might reduce cost by $5-10 per post. If you got 20 posts, that’s $100-200 in savings. Makes sense if footings won’t be in the way.

Chain link removal is usually cheaper per foot than wooden privacy fence. Less material volume, though the metal posts can be stubborn to remove.

Long fence runs get better per-foot pricing. We’re already there doing the work, so 200 feet costs less per foot than 50 feet would.

DIY Fence Removal vs Professional Service

DIY fence removal takes forever. What you think is a weekend project turns into three or four weekends of brutal work. By the time you’re done, you’re exhausted, sore, and swearing you’ll never do manual labor again.

Tool and equipment rental adds up. Post hole digger, reciprocating saw, sledgehammer, wheelbarrow, truck rental – you’re spending $200-300 on rentals and tools.

Dump fees surprise DIYers. Treated lumber disposal isn’t free. You’re making multiple trips to the eco-station, paying fees each time. Adds up to $150-250 just in disposal costs.

Risk of injury is real. Old fences have rusty nails everywhere. Splinters, cuts, smashed fingers, back injuries from lifting posts and concrete. We’ve got proper safety gear and experience.

One customer in Ellerslie spent two weekends removing his fence, got halfway done, threw out his back lifting a post with concrete attached. Called us to finish the job and recover on his couch.

Fence Demolition Timeline

Average residential fence removal takes 1-2 days depending on length and complexity. 100 feet of basic privacy fence? One day usually. 200+ feet with difficult access? Could take two days.

We work fast but thoroughly. Not just tearing stuff down and leaving a mess. We pull posts properly, haul away all materials, leave your yard clean.

Weather affects scheduling. Can’t effectively remove fences in winter when ground is frozen solid. Spring through fall is fence demo season in Edmonton.

We coordinate with your schedule and weather forecasts. No point scheduling fence removal right before a rainstorm that’ll turn your yard into mud.

Preparing Your Property for Fence Removal

Mark any underground utilities you know about. Sprinkler systems, gas lines, electrical – if there’s anything buried near the fence line, let us know.

Clear stuff away from the fence. Garden decorations, firewood piles, kid’s toys, whatever is leaning against the fence. Gives us clear access to work efficiently.

Let neighbors know we’ll be working. Noise from sawing and hammering, trucks in the alley, workers around the fence line. Courtesy heads up prevents complaints.

If you got dogs, they need to be inside or somewhere else while we work. Can’t have dogs in the yard while we’re tearing down their fence. Safety for everyone.

Mark any fence sections you want kept if it’s a partial removal. Sometimes people want front fence gone but back fence stays. Clear communication prevents mistakes.
